Greentown is a somewhat small town located in the state of Pennsylvania. With a population of 5,949 people and four associated neighborhoods, Greentown is the 254th largest community in Pennsylvania.Unlike some towns where white-collar or blue-collar occupations dominate the local economy, Greentown is neither predominantly one nor the other. Instead, it has a mixed workforce of both white- and blue-collar jobs. Overall, Greentown is a town of professionals, sales and office workers, and service providers. There are especially a lot of people living in Greentown who work in sales jobs (10.92%), office and administrative support (9.92%), and management occupations (7.54%). Of important note, Greentown is also a town of artists. Greentown has more artists, designers and people working in media than 90% of the communities in America. This concentration of artists helps shape Greentown’s character. Also of interest is that Greentown has more people living here who work in computers and math than 95% of the places in the US. Telecommuters are a relatively large percentage of the workforce: 14.75% of people work from home. While this number may seem small overall, as a fraction of the total workforce it is high relative to the nation. These workers are often telecommuters who work in knowledge-based, white-collar professions. For example, Silicon Valley has large numbers of people who telecommute. Other at-home workers may be self-employed people who operate small businesses out of their homes. Another notable thing is that Greentown is a major vacation destination. Much of the town’s population is seasonal: many people own second homes and only live there part-time, during the vacation season. The effect on the local economy is that many of the businesses are dependent on tourist dollars, and may operate only during the high season. As the vacation season ends, Greentown’s population drops significantly, such that year-round residents will notice that the city is a much quieter place to live. Because of many things, Greentown is a very good place for families to consider. With an enviable combination of good schools, low crime, college-educated neighbors who tend to support education because of their own experiences, and a high rate of home ownership in predominantly single-family properties, Greentown really has some of the features that families look for when choosing a good community to raise children. Is Greentown perfect? Of course not, and if you like frenetic nightlife, it will be far from your cup of tea. But overall this is a solid community, with many things to recommend it as a family-friendly place to live. It is a fairly quiet town because there are relatively few of those groups of people who have a tendency to be noisy. (Children, for example, often can't help themselves from being noisy, and being parents ourselves, we know!) Greentown has relatively few families with children living at home, and is quieter because of it. Renters and college students, for their own reasons, can also be noisy. Greentown has few renters and college students. But the biggest reason it is quieter in Greentown than in most places in America, is that there are just simply fewer people living here. If you think trees make good neighbors, Greentown may be for you. In Greentown, however, the average commute to work is quite long. On average, people spend 34.90 minutes each day getting to work, which is significantly higher than the national average. The education level of Greentown citizens is a little higher than the average for US cities and towns: 23.71% of adults in Greentown have at least a bachelor's degree. The per capita income in Greentown in 2022 was $36,942, which is upper middle income relative to Pennsylvania and the nation. This equates to an annual income of $147,768 for a family of four. However, Greentown contains both very wealthy and poor people as well. Greentown is a somewhat ethnically-diverse town. The people who call Greentown home describe themselves as belonging to a variety of racial and ethnic groups. The greatest number of Greentown residents report their race to be White, followed by Asian. Important ancestries of people in Greentown include German, Irish, Italian, English, and Polish. The most common language spoken in Greentown is English. Other important languages spoken here include Spanish and Slavic languages.
